Why Networking Is Crucial To Grow Your Business
One of the simplest ways to connect with more of the right people is through networking.
This is how showing up locally can help you win more work, build your reputation and have other people recommending you even when you are not in the room.
What Is Networking?
Networking is not just turning up with a stack of business cards. It is about showing up regularly, having real conversations and building trust with other business owners.
Across Sussex and Kent there are loads of events you can go to. Some are formal, some are relaxed, some are just business owners meeting for a drink. Every single one is a chance to meet people who either need what you do or know someone who does.
The more often you go, the more people get to know you. Not just your logo, but you as a person. That is what makes it work.
How Networking Can Boost Your Business
Let us set expectations. You probably will not walk into your first ever event and walk out with a big contract. It can happen, but it is not the point.
Networking works best over time. When you keep turning up, you become familiar. People see you are genuine. They understand what you do. Then when they are talking to a friend, a client or even a family member who says they need your service, your name comes up straight away.
That is when it goes from a weak referral to a strong one. Instead of someone saying, “I think I met someone who does that,” it becomes, “I know exactly who you need. They are brilliant. Here is their number.”
That is how you end up with a small group of business owners who are happy to recommend you. And of course you do the same for them. Everyone wins.
I have even seen people mention a specific big company they wanted to speak to, and someone else in the room said they knew the owner and could introduce them. You cannot buy that kind of access. It really is who you know.
What Does a Networking Event Look Like?
There are a couple of main styles and you can try both.
Formal networking
These are usually weekly or every other week.
They are often in the morning with breakfast, or at lunchtime.
You normally pay a membership or annual fee, plus the cost for each meeting.
They follow a set structure. There will be a person running the meeting, time to mingle, and time for everyone to introduce their business, usually in around 60 seconds.
There is often a longer 10 minute talk from one member so people can understand their business better.
It is organised and good for people who like routine and accountability.
Informal networking
These are more relaxed.
Some will loosely follow a format but without strict timings, so you can talk more naturally.
Others are just social style business meetups where you chat for a couple of hours.
They are often free or low cost, for example, around £10 with a drink included.
There is a growing number of social networking events too, such as meals out.
The events arranged and hosted by Cale at Kangaroo Connections are a good example of this style. Friendly, relaxed and focused on real connections.
